Diamondback Terrapin, Malaclemys terrapin
Diamondbacks are unique in being the only brackish-water turtle that lives in the coastal marshes of New England. Their status ranges from Endangered to Threatened depending on the state. In the past, this medium-sized turtle was abundant in many of our coastal marshes and waterways. Terrapin populations now face many threats to their continued survival. I painted this piece as part of a workshop I did teaching children to paint these terrapins at Mattapoisett Center School in MA. Through NECWA's South Coast Terrapin Project, the children raised hatchling Diamondbacks in their classroom and then we released them back into the wild.

My mission as an artist is to inspire an appreciation for and curiosity about nature and its creatures by communicating the aesthetic beauty of this planet’s amazing creatures as they really are.
It is my hope that this appreciation will result in acts of empathy & stewardship towards these incredible creatures portrayed in my paintings.
