American Alligator, Alligator mississippiensis
An exciting sight for tourists, these massive reptiles can grow to be 11 feet long and weigh almost half a ton! The American Alligator inhabits marshlands all along the southern coast of the states, from Texas to North Carolina. Alligators are considered a keystone species by providing small ponds where aquatic organisms can reside during the dry season. They are also an important biological indicator of the health of Everglade and Wetland habitats.
