I'm thrilled to share a new original watercolor painting with you, a Beach Rose Hip study that holds a deeply personal connection to the South County shores of Rhode Island.
This piece has been years in the making. It began as a simple field study, inspired by countless coastal walks through the dunes, and was finally brought to life at the start of this year with a fresh perspective and renewed intention. For me, it evokes those vivid moments of discovering rose hips tucked among the grasses, bright red against the pale sand, while walking with family and friends along New England’s timeless beaches.
The beach rose, Rosa rugosa, is a hardy, salt-tolerant species native to coastal regions of Asia but long naturalized along the New England shoreline. Its wrinkled, fragrant pink blooms are a familiar summer sight, but it’s the vibrant rose hips in late summer and fall. rich in vitamin C and loved by birds, that inspired this work. These small fruits are often overlooked, yet they mark the change of seasons and speak to the quiet resilience of life on the coast.
I would be honored to see it find a home with someone who shares my appreciation for these subtle treasures of the New England shore. I always enjoy hearing from my fellow art and nature enthusiasts, so please feel free to reach out with any questions about this piece or to share your own rose hip memories.
